Assessing and Managing Risks of COVID-19

Managing Safely During The Coronavirus Outbreak

Everyone needs to assess and manage the risks of COVID-19. As an employer, you also have a legal responsibility to protect your workers and others from the risk to their health and safety. This means you need to think about the risks they face and do everything reasonably practicable to minimise them, also recognising that you can’t completely eliminate the risk of COVID-19.

To do this, you must make sure that the risk assessment for your business addresses all the risks of COVID-19. A risk assessment is not about creating huge amounts of paperwork, it’s about identifying sensible measures to control the risks in your workplace. As an employer, you’re required by law to protect your employees, and others, from harm. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the minimum you must do is:

– Identify what could cause injury or illness in your business (hazards)
– Decide how likely it is that someone could be harmed and how seriously (the risk)
– Take action to eliminate the hazard, or if this isn’t possible, control the risk
